Biography

Early Life and Band Beginnings

Sam Battle was born in 1989 in England and showed an early passion for music and technology. As a teenager, he built his own guitar effects pedal at age 14, which sparked his interest in creating electronic devices. In 2014, Battle burst onto the music scene as the frontman of an indie rock band called ZIBRA. The band gained national exposure after performing at the Glastonbury Festival in 2015 as part of BBC Introducing. However, the group eventually parted ways in 2016. This turn of events encouraged Battle to focus on his solo ambitions and experiment more with the electronic sounds he loved.

Solo Career and YouTube Success

After ZIBRA, Battle launched a solo career, embracing electronic music and homemade synthesizers. He began sharing his inventions and songs on a new YouTube channel under the alias Look Mum No Computer in late 2016. One of his early videos, featuring a custom-built “Synth Bike” (a bicycle turned into a synthesizer), quickly went viral and earned him thousands of viewers. Over the next few years, he built a loyal online following by regularly posting videos of quirky musical machines and original tunes.

As of 2026, Look Mum No Computer’s videos have accumulated over 85 million views. He has more than 1.4 million combined followers across YouTube and social media. Battle also funds many projects through fan support on Patreon. With that, he reflects the strong community he has cultivated around his inventive music style. Despite the high-tech nature of his work, Battle often performs live with a custom analog synthesizer rig (nicknamed “Kosmo”) he built himself.

Inventive Projects and Achievements

Look Mum No Computer became famous for building and playing unusual electronic instruments. Many of his creations have attracted media attention. For example, he constructed a pipe organ out of dozens of Furby toys and even arranged a “Star Wars droid orchestra” using homemade musical robots. He has also ridden on stage with his Synthesizer Bike and wowed audiences with a keyboard that shoots flames. These eccentric projects highlight his motto of making music without relying on conventional computers.

Battle’s innovative work has led to several notable achievements. He delivered a TEDx talk to share his creative approach to music technology. Battle earned a Guinness World Record for building the world’s largest modular drone synthesizer. In addition, he founded an interactive museum in Kent called This Museum Is (Not) Obsolete, dedicated to obsolete and experimental technology. This museum exhibits many of his inventions, allowing the public to experience his imaginative instruments firsthand. In 2025, Battle even ventured into video games. He collaborated on a retro-style synthesizer video game inspired by his work, which was released on multiple platforms. The video game earned a nomination for a German Game Award in audio design.

Music Releases and Collaborations

Alongside building gadgets, Look Mum No Computer has pursued a recording career. In 2019, Battle released his debut single “Groundhog Day,” marking his first official step as a solo artist. He followed up with several singles such as “Modern Gas” and “Shock Horror,” and eventually released full-length collections of his work. His energetic electronic pop/rock style, combined with the analog sounds of his inventions, has earned him a dedicated fan base. To support his releases, Battle embarked on a European tour in 2019, performing in the UK, Germany, and Switzerland. His live shows often feature his homemade instruments, adding a visual wow-factor to the concert experience.

In addition to his solo material, Battle has engaged in noteworthy collaborations. He has co-written and produced music for other artists and media projects. Notably, he worked with British singer Barns Courtney on the song “Glitter and Gold” for a Netflix series, and teamed up with songwriter Charlie Fink on “Satellite Moment” for the film A Street Cat Named Bob. In 2022, Battle joined forces with fellow electronic musicians Cuckoo and Hainbach to form a synth-centric supergroup called Uncompressed. These ventures outside his channel demonstrate his versatility as a composer and performer, extending his influence into film, television, and collaborative music projects.

Eurovision Song Contest 2026

In February 2026, Sam Battle – under his stage name Look Mum No Computer – was officially announced as the United Kingdom’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026. The BBC selected him internally, opting for an experimental artist with a fresh approach. The news was revealed by DJ Scott Mills during his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show on 17 February 2026.
