Biography

Morena, whose real name is Margerita Camilleri Fenech, is a prominent Maltese singer born on March 7, 1984, in Sannat, Gozo, Malta. Known for her dynamic stage presence and powerful vocals, Morena has become a recognizable figure in Malta’s music scene. Her stage name “Morena,” meaning brunette, highlights her distinctive appearance.

Morena discovered her passion for music early in life, practicing singing enthusiastically at home. Her musical talents were nurtured by her elder sister Georgina, a trained soprano, who helped Morena develop her vocal skills. At the age of 18, Morena began her professional music career as the lead singer of the band Spectrum, marking her entry into the Maltese entertainment industry.

In 2006, Morena competed for the first time in the Malta Song for Europe competition with the song “Time,” performed alongside Paul Giordimaina, finishing in ninth place. Two years later, in 2008, she returned stronger with two entries: “Casanova” and “Vodka.” While “Casanova” achieved fifth place, “Vodka” won the competition, allowing Morena to represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade. At Eurovision 2008, she performed “Vodka” in the second semi-final, where she placed 14th and did not progress to the final.

Following her Eurovision experience, Morena continued actively contributing to Malta’s music and cultural events. She released singles including “Solo Amigos?” and “My Heart and My Soul,” demonstrating her musical versatility. In December 2015, Morena showcased her talent as choir director of the ‘Fjur tal-Martri Margerita Choir’ during the Christmas Grand Concert organized by the St. Margaret Band.

In February 2016, Morena appeared on the popular Maltese television show “Hadd Ghalik,” winning a special carnival-themed episode. She further solidified her presence on Malta’s cultural calendar by releasing a comprehensive 4-CD Christmas compilation titled “tal-Milied għad-Dar Tal-Providenza.”

Morena remained a sought-after presenter and performer at significant events throughout Malta and Gozo. She successfully hosted and participated in various popular events, including the Gozo Carnival in 2016, the annual Santa Margerita Band Christmas Concert, and the KANTAMAGĦNA music festival in 2023.

In her personal life, Morena welcomed her first child, a son named Zac, in 2015. She married her husband, Brian, in October 2017, and the couple celebrated the birth of their daughter, Estelle, in August 2018.
