Biography

Ari Ólafsson, born on 21 May 1998 in Reykjavík, Iceland, is a classically trained singer known for representing Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. He spent part of his childhood in Florida, USA, before returning to Iceland, where his musical talents were recognized early. At the age of 11, he secured the lead role in the musical Oliver! at the National Theatre of Iceland, Borgarleikhúsið. In 2011, Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø invited him to perform at various events after discovering his vocal abilities.

In 2015, Ólafsson participated in the Icelandic version of The Voice, gaining further national attention. He also served as a backing vocalist in Iceland’s national selection for Eurovision, Söngvakeppnin, in 2017.

In 2018, he won Söngvakeppnin with the song “Our Choice,” earning the right to represent Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon. Despite a heartfelt performance, he did not advance to the final, placing 19th in the first semi-final with 15 points.

Following Eurovision, Ólafsson released his debut single “Too Good” on 28 June 2019. He pursued formal music education at the Royal Academy of Music in London, graduating with a degree in opera in May 2022.

In September 2023, Ólafsson performed at the Eurostarz in Concert event in London, reflecting on his career and experiences since Eurovision.
