🇬🇧 Clodagh Rodgers passed away

The sad news came to us that Clodagh Rodgers passed away. She represented the United Kingdom in the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Jack in the Box”.

Breakthrough

Clodagh Rodgers is a Northern Irish singer and actress. She rose to fame in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Clodagh was born on March 5, 1947, in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. She began her music career at just 13 years old. She signed her first record deal with Decca Records at 14 and recorded early singles under the name “Cloda Rogers.”

Rodgers found limited success in the early years. Her big breakthrough came in 1969 when she teamed up with American songwriter Kenny Young. Together, they released “Come Back and Shake Me,” a hit that reached number 3 on the UK Singles Chart. This was followed by “Goodnight Midnight,” which peaked at number 4, and “Biljo,” a top 30 hit. These songs established her as a popular figure in British pop music.

Eurovision

In 1971, Clodagh Rodgers represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest with the upbeat pop song “Jack in the Box.” The contest was held in Dublin, and Rodgers finished in fourth place. However, her participation was not without controversy. As a Catholic from Northern Ireland representing the UK, she received threats from the IRA, making her appearance both brave and historic.

Following Eurovision, Rodgers continued her music career and released albums such as It’s Different Now (1972), You Are My Music (1973), and Save Me (1977). While her chart success declined in the mid-1970s, she remained active in the entertainment industry. She hosted her own television program, The Clodagh Rodgers Show, and appeared on various UK TV shows including The Two Ronnies and Seaside Special.

Focus on musical theatre

In the 1980s and 1990s, Rodgers shifted her focus to musical theatre. She performed in West End productions like Pump Boys and Dinettes and toured with Blood Brothers from 1995 to 1998. She also appeared in TV series such as The Bill in the early 2000s.

Personal life

Clodagh Rodgers has been married twice and is the mother of two sons. Her first husband was manager John Morris, and later she married guitarist Ian Sorbie.

Today, Clodagh Rodgers is remembered as a talented singer with a strong voice, a Eurovision legend, and a key figure in British pop culture during the late 20th century.
