Biography
The KMG’s, short for Krazy Mess Groovers, were a Belgian funk and soul band active between 2003 and 2012. The group was formed in Belgium in 2003, bringing together musicians from various cultural backgrounds. Their music combined funk, jazz, and soul, inspired by the sound of the 1970s. From the start, The KMG’s stood out for their large lineup, brass-heavy arrangements, and energetic live performances.
In 2004, the group released their debut single, which introduced their unique take on modern funk while paying tribute to classic grooves. Two years later, in 2006, they released their first full-length album titled Funky Soul Power, which captured their live sound and playful, retro spirit. The album helped them build a solid following in Belgium and neighbouring countries.
In 2007, The KMG’s reached a wider audience when they were internally selected by RTBF, the Walloon public broadcaster, to represent Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest. They competed in the semi-final in Helsinki with the song “Love Power,” a funky track co-written by Paul Curtiz and Wakas Ashiq, who performed under the stage name Sexyfire. Due to Eurovision rules limiting acts to six performers on stage, only part of the band appeared in the televised performance. Despite their lively staging and distinct musical style, they did not qualify for the final, finishing 26th in the semi-final with 14 points. “Love Power” was released as a single that year, tied to their Eurovision participation.
The group remained active after Eurovision. In 2009, they released the EP Wake Up, continuing to build their catalogue with songs that combined upbeat rhythms and social themes. During these years, they performed across Belgium, France, and Luxembourg, appearing at music festivals and clubs and gaining recognition in the European funk scene.
After nearly a decade of music-making and performing, The KMG’s disbanded in 2012.
