Biography

From Pindstrup to the Danish Rap Scene

Thomas Lægaard Sørensen was born on 15 August 1971 in Pindstrup, Syddjurs, Denmark. He performs under the stage name Kølig Kaj, which translates directly as “Cool Kaj” in Danish. Long before the mainstream noticed him, Thomas was already building a reputation in the underground hip-hop scene. As early as 1994, he released an early recording called 2 Can Kaffe, showing an appetite for music that predated his national breakthrough by several years. Thomas also served as MC host at the Danish Rap Championship (DM i Rap) from 1996 to 1998, a role that confirmed his place at the heart of the Danish freestyle rap scene. Furthermore, he featured on “Hvem er det der banker”, the closing track on Danish hip-hop act Hvid Sjokolade’s 1996 album Så’n er vi, working alongside some of the key names of early Danish rap.

Winning Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 1997

In 1997, Thomas stepped into the national spotlight as Kølig Kaj. DR held the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 1997 on 1 March 1997 at its television studios in Copenhagen. Ten songs competed, and the winner was chosen solely by a public televote, which led to the victory of “Stemmen i mit liv” performed by Kølig Kaj. The show attracted 1.1 million viewers in Denmark, making it the most popular show of the evening. The song reached number four on the Danish charts, proving that rap in the Danish language could connect with a mainstream audience. Notably, the song’s lyrics were written by Thomas Lægaard himself, with music composed by Lars Pedersen.

Eurovision 1997 and a Plagiarism Controversy

Following his Melodi Grand Prix victory, Kølig Kaj took “Stemmen i mit liv” to the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 in Dublin, Ireland. He placed 16th with 25 points in the final. The song told the story of a man falling for the voice of a telephone operator, an unusual subject for the Eurovision stage. However, the track did not escape scrutiny. The song faced accusations of plagiarism, as some claimed it sounded similar to “Don’t You Know That?” by soul singer Luther Vandross, released in 1981. Nevertheless, producer Chief 1, who co-composed the track, firmly rejected this claim. Despite the controversy, the Eurovision appearance gave Kølig Kaj a platform that few Danish rappers of that era could match.

Album Release and Life After the Spotlight

After the whirlwind of 1997, Kølig Kaj continued to create music. His debut album Solgt Ud! arrived on 21 March 1997, released to coincide with his period of national fame. He also kept releasing music under his alternative alias Koolbandi in the years that followed. In December 2013, he released the single “Vil du være min”, and in June 2014 he put out the album Lokaliseringen, known in English as Localization. These releases showed that Thomas never abandoned his passion for rap, even as the wider public moved on. Since 2001, he has made his home in Fredericia, where he has continued to work within the Danish music community.

A Pioneer Recognised by His Peers

While many Danes know Kølig Kaj only through his Melodi Grand Prix moment, the freestyle rap community has long held him in much higher regard. He is widely recognised as one of Denmark’s pioneers of improvised freestyle rap, a style that demands quick thinking, creativity, and natural flow. Freestyle fans remember him as a legend who, with his talent and positive energy, helped shape Danish freestyle rap in its early days. That was long before YouTube made the genre accessible across the whole country. This legacy is far bigger than any chart position.

The Hall of Fame and Today

The Danish freestyle rap community made Thomas’s contribution official in 2017. When Dansk Freestyle Raps Hall of Fame was created in 2017, Kølig Kaj was among the very first four inductees, alongside Michael C.U.P, Thomas Enghave, and Kejser A. He was formally added to the Danish Freestyle Hall of Fame in 2018. Today, Thomas Lægaard Sørensen remains an active and respected figure in the Danish hip-hop world, remembered both as the man who brought rap to the biggest television stage in Denmark’s history, and as a genuine pioneer who helped build the freestyle rap culture from the ground up.
