Koit Toome – Estonian Singer and Musical Actor
Koit Toome (born 3 January 1979) is an Estonian singer and musical theater actor. He emerged in the mid-1990s and has become a prominent figure in the Estonian music scene. Known for his powerful voice and stage presence, Toome has starred in numerous popular musicals . He has twice represented Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest. Toome continues to entertain audiences to this day.
Early Life and Code One
Koit Toome’s musical journey began as a teenager in the 1990s. In 1994, producer Mikk Targo discovered Toome at a music school and initially planned to launch him as a solo singer. However, a collaboration with his schoolmate Sirli Hiius changed those plans. The pair’s voices blended perfectly, and together they formed the pop duo Code One. The duo quickly gained popularity in Estonia with a string of hit songs that remain beloved classics. Code One performed actively through the late 1990s. After that successful run, Toome shifted focus to a solo career while occasionally reuniting with Hiius for special performances.
Eurovision Debut and Solo Breakthrough
In 1998, Koit Toome stepped onto the international stage by representing Estonia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Birmingham. He performed the ballad “Mere lapsed” and achieved a 12th-place finish in the contest. That same year, Toome released his debut solo album, showcasing his own songwriting. Over the next decade, he released a total of five albums, both solo and with Code One, solidifying his place in the Estonian pop music scene. His most recent studio album, titled Kaugele siit (“Far From Here”), came out in 2010.
Continued Success and Other Ventures
Throughout the 2000s, Koit Toome remained a household name in Estonia. In 2007, he won the TV competition Tantsud tähtedega, Estonia’s version of Dancing with the Stars, with his dance partner Kertu Tänav. He also expanded into voice acting, providing the Estonian voice of Lightning McQueen in Disney’s animated film Cars. Meanwhile, Toome continued to record music and perform concerts. He also recorded hit duets with other artists. For example, his song “Valged ööd” with singer Getter Jaani reached #1 in Estonia in 2011. This success showcased Toome’s versatility as an entertainer.
Eurovision Comeback and Recent Music
In 2017, Koit Toome returned to Eurovision, this time in a duet with singer Laura Põldvere. The pair won Eesti Laul (Estonia’s national song competition) with their song “Verona”, earning the right to represent Estonia in Kyiv. The entry was a fan favorite, but despite high expectations they did not advance to the Eurovision final. Toome remained active in music afterward. He later attempted another Eurovision bid in Eesti Laul 2021 with the song “We Could Have Been Beautiful”, finishing fourth in the national final. In recent years, Toome has continued to release new music and perform live, maintaining his status as a beloved figure in Estonian pop culture.
Musical Theatre Career
Alongside his pop career, Koit Toome has built a remarkable resume in musical theatre. He has consistently landed leading roles in major stage productions. His musical theatre debut came in 2000 as Alfred in Tanz der Vampire (Dance of the Vampires). He soon followed with roles such as Marius in Les Misérables (2001) and Chris in Miss Saigon (2002), even reprising Miss Saigon in a Helsinki production.
Toome continued to shine on stage with parts like Tony in West Side Story (2005) and lead roles in other hit musicals including Chess, Rent, and Hair. In 2014, he joined the cast of The Phantom of the Opera at Vanemuine Theatre, playing the romantic hero Raoul. He later took over the title role of The Phantom for the show’s final run in 2016–2017 and again in 2020–2021. Koit Toome’s passion for the stage continued with the iconic role of Jean Valjean in an Estonian revival of Les Misérables, which premiered in late 2017.
