Biography
Georgeta Povorozniuc, professionally known as Geta Burlacu, is a renowned Moldovan jazz and ethno jazz singer, born on July 22, 1974, in Bălți, Moldova. She began her musical journey at the age of seven, studying violin at the local music school and later graduating from the College of Music in Bălți as a violinist. In 1993, she pursued further education at the Academy of Music in Chișinău, focusing on jazz and folk music.
Burlacu’s professional career commenced in 1997, leading her to perform across various countries, including Germany, France, Ireland, Romania, Ukraine, Belarus, and China. She has been associated with several musical groups, notably serving as a vocalist for the vocal jazz band Univox from 1998 to 2011. Between 2005 and 2007, she imparted her knowledge as a professor of jazz voice at the Academy of Music, Theatre and Fine Arts in Moldova. Her dedication to music was recognized in 2006 when she received a scholarship from the Soros Foundation.
In 2007, Burlacu expanded her musical horizons by participating in an international tour with the esteemed Cuban ensemble, Buena Vista Social Club, performing in Romania. The following year, she represented Moldova at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song “A Century of Love.” Despite a heartfelt performance, the song did not advance to the final, marking Moldova’s first non-qualification since its Eurovision debut in 2005.
Throughout her career, Burlacu has been a prominent figure in various musical collaborations. Since 2009, she has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra TeleRadio-Moldova and collaborated with jazz ensembles such as the Alex Calancea Band and ANGRY Band, as well as the folk music group Taraf Lăutăresc. Her discography includes albums like “Ce n-aș da…” (2005), “La Poarta Pământului” (2008), “O Sete Nebună” (2009), “Cine Iubește” (2010), and a collection of Christmas carols titled “Să ningă cerul peste noi” (2012).
Beyond her musical endeavors, Burlacu has contributed to theater, notably performing in “The Erotic Carousel” by David Hare at the Eugene Ionesco Theater in Chișinău in 2013. She has also been involved in numerous social and charitable projects and was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Population Fund in Moldova.
In 2014, she was invited by the Association “Connexions Moldavie” and, with support from the Bureau for Diaspora Relations, held two “Winter Jazz” concerts in Paris and Luxembourg. These performances marked the first official concerts by Moldovan cultural representatives in Luxembourg and were warmly received by the Moldovan diaspora and officials from the Moldovan Embassies in Belgium and France.
Later that year, in July 2014, she participated in the international festival “Urban Voices” in France. During this event, she performed pieces from the repertoire of the renowned Romanian singer Maria Tănase. Notably, Burlacu sang “Lume, lume,” accompanied by musicians from India, Canada, Venezuela, Algeria, France, and Moldova, alongside an impressive choir of 800 individuals. This project fused various musical genres and cultures from the East and West.
In 2015, Burlacu released the album “Colind pentru părinți” in collaboration with Aurel Chiriac. After 2015, Geta Burlacu continued to make significant contributions to the Moldovan music scene. In 2024, she released the single “Rețeta Dorului De Mamă,” which showcases her enduring talent and connection to her cultural roots.
