Biography
DJ Balthazar, born Georgi Mateev on September 23, 1977, in Sofia, Bulgaria, is a prominent DJ and producer in the electronic music scene. He began his professional DJ career in 1998 and has since become one of Bulgaria’s most respected electronic artists.
In 2002, Balthazar founded Renesanz, a record label and booking agency, through which he has promoted numerous electronic dance music events in Bulgaria. He has performed at major clubs and festivals across Europe, sharing stages with well-known DJs and live acts.
Since 2003, Balthazar has been producing music with his studio partner JackRock (Hristo Ivanov). Their collaboration led to the release of their debut vinyl record, “Rockin’ Dancefloor,” in January 2006, which reached number one in sales charts and was played by many international DJs.
In 2008, Balthazar collaborated with the Bulgarian group Deep Zone Project to represent Bulgaria at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “DJ, Take Me Away.” They finished 11th in the second semi-final and did not advance to the final.
After Eurovision, DJ Balthazar continued to make significant contributions to the electronic music scene. In 2010 and 2011, he was voted “Best Bulgarian Techno/Minimal DJ” and secured the second position in 2012. His collaboration with JackRock led to numerous releases on various labels, enhancing their international recognition.
In 2013, Balthazar & JackRock released their debut album featuring collaborations with artists such as Andrea Roma, AnGy KoRe, and Spartaque. They also established two additional labels, Beast Factory Recordings and Textro Records, further expanding their influence in the techno genre.
Between 2018 and 2025, DJ Balthazar, alongside his long-time collaborator JackRock, continued to make significant strides in the global techno scene. In 2018, their track “Rave Story” was recognized in DJ Mag’s Best 50 Tracks, highlighting their influence in the electronic music community.
In 2023, they released the “In The Dark” EP on KNTXT, a prominent techno label. The title track achieved the number one position on Beatport’s Top 100 Trance chart, both as a single and as a release, showcasing their continued relevance and adaptability in the evolving techno landscape.
Throughout this period, Balthazar & JackRock maintained a robust international touring schedule, performing in over 31 countries across Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa.
Beyond his musical endeavors, DJ Balthazar is an avid traveler, having visited approximately 160 countries. He believes that constant movement motivates and recharges him, preventing boredom and inspiring his creative pursuits.
