Biography

Born to Perform: Early Life and Roots

Deborah “Debbie” Scerri was born in Toronto, Canada, on 25 March 1969. She grew up attending the Government Primary School in Rabat and later the Government Secondary School in Rabat before completing her upper secondary education in Msida. From a young age, she threw herself into singing and acting, always taking part in school activities. She also performed with her brother Jason Sherry, who later became a successful singer and dancer based in Germany. That family connection to the stage clearly helped fuel her ambition. Moreover, she took part in many local song festivals, including Malta Song for Europe, the Malta International Song Festival, L-Għanja tal-Poplu, and the Malta Hit Song Contest, as well as performing in local night spots, on cruise liners, and on radio and television.

Building a Career Through Festivals and Competitions

Debbie wasted no time building her name on the Maltese music scene. In 1993, she served as a backing vocalist for William Mangion at the Eurovision Song Contest. The following year, she represented Malta in the EU Song Contest Cyprus & Malta in Thessaloniki, performing as a duet with Alexander Schembri. She then entered the 1996 South Pacific International Song Contest in Australia. Debbie went on to win the Malta Music Awards for Best Singer in both 1996 and 1997 for two consecutive years A clear sign that the Maltese music world had taken full notice of her talents. Additionally, her debut release, the mini-album Born to Love featuring singer Alexander Schembri, came out in 1995

Eurovision 1997 and International Opportunities

In 1997, Debbie reached one of the biggest stages in European music. She represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin with the song “Let Me Fly”, which finished in 9th place with 66 points. The success of “Let Me Fly” brought her multiple opportunities in Australia, Canada, the United States and Cyprus, where she collaborated with Cypriot artists. Furthermore, her purple and blue dress made her the first ever recipient of the Barbara Dex Award, a lighthearted prize given annually to the most outlandishly dressed competitor in the contest.

Musicals, Theatre, and a Life on Stage

Beyond festivals and competitions, Debbie built a rich career in musical theatre. She appeared in productions including Erwieħ (1992), Ali Baba (1994), Ġesu’ ta’ Nazareth (1998/1999), Robin Hood (2003), Sebastian (2006), and The Passion of the Christ, where she played the role of Mary between 2006 and 2012. Debbie Scerri also took part in major concert productions alongside some of Malta’s finest performers. She worked closely with the Spiteri Lucas Brothers and the Yada Dance Company. The singer appeared in shows like That’s Amore (2004), Strait Street (2006), Notre Dame de Paris (2007), and Sister Act (2008). Each production added another layer to an already diverse performing career.

Television, Radio, and Continuing Recognition

Alongside her stage work, Debbie also made a name for herself in front of the camera. Scerri works as a television presenter in Malta, hosting various shows, and she has also taken part as an actress in local television serials. She served as a presenter for multiple television and radio programmes. That made her a familiar face and voice in Maltese homes. She also received the honour of being chosen by the Indian High Commission in Malta to interpret a popular song to mark 150 years since the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. That recognition shows the respect she has earned well beyond the world of pop music competitions.
