Road to Rotterdam: Bulgaria

When the Eurovision song contest was canceled last year, Bulgaria was number 1 at the bookmakers. Victoria Georgieva seemed to be heading for the first Bulgarian victory with “Tears getting sober”. It was not going to happen, but the Bulgarians were of course happy to work with this former X-Factor participant for another year. The audience was allowed to choose one out of five songs. It became this “Growing up is getting old”. photo credits: © Lora Musheva

Road to Rotterdam: North Macedonia

When Vasil Garvanliev is on the podium for North Macedonia, he will be relieved. He was already there as a backing vocalist when Tamara Todevska finished seventh. In 2020 he would represent North Macedonia himself. This was canceled due to the Corona crisis. North Macedonian broadcaster selected him for the 2021 contest. But when the clip of “Here I stand” was published, it turned out that it contained three paintings in the colors of the Bulgarian flag. A petition was held by extreme nationalists not to send Vasil to the Eurovision song contest. The broadcaster started an investigation.Fortunately, the whole story fizzled out. Eurovision fans organized a counter-petition and Vasil is allowed to go to Rotterdam after all.

Vasil came up with his own statement today: “I am a music ambassador, and in music there is no religion, politics, orientation, race or color. I had absolutely no intentions to hurt anybody. Quite the opposite! I am so proud of this project which not only embodies me, but my country and culture – musicians and featured artists in the gallery. I do not apologise for being me. I never will – I didn’t have a choice in that. However, if I hurt ANYBODY in ANY WAY, from the bottom of my heart … I am sorry. Forgive me.”
