Biography

Tony Wegas is an Austrian singer and actor. He originates from a Romany gypsy family of Hungarian origin. In 1991, he took part in the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest and became 2nd. That was reason for Austrian television to select him twice in a row to represent Austria in the contest: in 1992 and 1993. In the following years Wegas had more and more problems with alcohol, cocaine and heroin. Finally, he was arrested in April 1997  for cocaine use and two handbag thefts and went to jail. After his release on October 1, 1999, he and his ex-therapist Andreas Mauerer published the autobiographical book “Nüchtern betrachtet”. Tony Wegas was married three times. Bankruptcy proceedings were started in June 2007, which ended in October of the same year. On April 12, 2017, Tony performed at the ORF breakfast show “Guten Morgen Austria”.
