Biography

Early Life and Background

Stelios Constantas (born 1982 in Larnaca, Cyprus) is a Cypriot singer-songwriter best known for representing Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2003. He developed an interest in music at a very young age, learning to play the guitar as a child. In his youth, Constantas was also an avid football player, but he eventually chose to leave football in order to focus on a career in music.

Musical Beginnings and Success in Cyprus

Constantas began his professional music career in the early 1990s and soon worked with notable Greek and Cypriot artists, including famous singer Anna Vissi and others in the industry. His debut album, Apopse Stin Skopia, was released in 1994 and became a big hit in Cyprus. Over the next few years, he followed up with three more albums, which helped him gain widespread popularity in his home country. Constantas also released a mini-album titled Me Taxidevis (“Με Ταξιδεύεις”, meaning “You Take Me Traveling”), further showcasing his musical style. By the late 1990s, he was a well-known pop artist in Cyprus with a strong fan base.

Eurovision Attempts and National Finals

Stelios Constantas had early ambitions to participate in Eurovision. He took part in Cyprus’s national selection contests twice in the 1990s, seeking the chance to represent his country. In 1997 he competed with the song “I grammitis ntropi,” achieving second place in the Cypriot national final. Two years later, he entered the 1999 national final with the song “Methysmeno feggari,” where he finished in fourth place. Constantas remained determined to reach the Eurovision stage, continuing to refine his songwriting and performance skills.

Eurovision Song Contest 2003

Constantas’s persistence paid off in 2003. The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) internally selected him to be the country’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2003 in Riga, Latvia. He performed the upbeat pop song “Feeling Alive,” which he had written and composed himself. Cyprus finished 20th out of 26 entries in the 2003 contest, earning a total of 15 points. Constantas took pride in representing his nation on the Eurovision stage, and “Feeling Alive” remains his most internationally recognized song.

Later Career and Personal Life

After his Eurovision appearance, Constantas continued to pursue music and expanded his career into Greece. In 2002, around the time of his Eurovision preparations, he moved to Athens with his wife and their three children to further his career in the larger Greek music market. He collaborated with Greek artists such as Nikos Kourkoulis and even worked with the group Antique (known for their Eurovision success in 2001) during this period. Constantas signed with V2 Records, through which he released a studio album and a single, including the commercial release of “Feeling Alive”. This move helped bring his music to a broader audience in both Cyprus and Greece.

In the following years, Stelios Constantas remained active in the music scene. He continued to perform live at concerts and events, both in Greece and back home in Cyprus. For example, he was featured in a live music event in Larnaca in 2022, demonstrating his lasting presence on stage. Throughout his career, Constantas has balanced his professional life with his personal life. He is known to keep his family life relatively private, but it is public knowledge that he is married and has three children, as mentioned when he relocated to Greece.
