Biography

Miriam Christine Borg (born June 30, 1978, in Santo Antônio do Descoberto, Goiás, Brazil) is a Maltese pop and R&B singer, songwriter, and vocal coach. She is one of the most distinctive voices in Maltese music, blending soul, rhythm and blues, and Mediterranean warmth into a style that is entirely her own.

Early Life and Musical Roots

Miriam was born in Brazil but adopted and raised on the Mediterranean island of Gozo. At the age of six, she began singing and piano lessons. From early on, she drew inspiration from a wide range of artists. She listened closely to soul music, jazz legends such as Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, and later-day talents like Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, and Alicia Keys. Rather than copying any one style, she absorbed all of these influences and shaped them into something personal. Growing up on the quiet island of Gozo gave her music a unique perspective, a Mediterranean calm sitting side by side with the fire of R&B.

Breakthrough and Song for Europe

Miriam took to singing and took part in various festivals before eventually winning the Song for Europe Festival. In 1996, at just 17 years old, she won the Maltese national selection with “In a Woman’s Heart,” a song written by Paul Abela and Alfred C. Sant. The video clip was fresh and modern, and on the night of the contest she wore a Benetton outfit and performed alongside three backing vocalists. She represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo, where Malta started among the top five in the voting but gradually settled at tenth place with 68 points.

Albums, Television, and Growing Recognition

Following her national success, Miriam continued to build her career steadily. In 1998, her debut album Smile and Shine arrived in stores, full of rhythm and blues and African American influences. She also furthered her studies in music and found a job with Education 22, the state education channel. Furthermore, she grew as a songwriter, composing most of her own material. In 2008, two major milestones arrived. She formed the Gozo Children’s Choir, a long-held dream, and won the Malta Hit Song Contest on One TV with her self-written song “Alone Today.” These achievements showed both her artistic range and her commitment to her community.

Festival Success and Maltese-Language Music

Throughout the 2010s, Miriam kept pushing her artistry forward. In November 2013, she took part in the Festival Internazzjonali tal-Kanzunetta Maltija and won the Best Interpretation Award. Then, in early 2014, she participated in the Semi-Final of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Safe.” Additionally, in March 2014, she joined Olivia Lewis for the 38th edition of the Festival Għanja tal-Poplu, finishing third with the song “Minn Wara l-KanÄ‹ell,” which she composed herself and performed on piano. These years proved that she remained a relevant and respected name in Maltese music. She also became a strong supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, performing at Malta Gay Pride celebrations on several occasions.

Dil-Mara and Recent Work

In 2019 and 2020, Miriam entered a bold new chapter. She released Dil-Mara, her first complete album in the Maltese language, featuring original songs including “Bi Ftit Kliem,” “Mill-Għatba ‘l Ä ew,” and the title track. The album also included the uplifting single “Kuraġġ,” released during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its music video, featuring aerial shots of Malta and Gozo, gained over 40,000 views. The album showed a mature, deeply personal side of her songwriting. Today, Miriam continues to work as a vocal coach, where her greatest passion is helping students find their own voice, both physically and emotionally. She also performs at live events and appears on local television. After nearly three decades in music, Miriam Christine Borg remains one of Malta’s most enduring and authentic musical voices.
