Biography
Early life and first songs
Mélanie Cohl was born in Tournai on 4 January 1982. Music came into her life very early. She learned the violin when she was five and later studied music, diction and performance at the Conservatoire de Tournai. At the same time, she started singing in local contests under the name Kelly Logan. That early period was not just practice. In 1992, a single called “Chante avec nous” appeared under that name, which shows that she entered the studio while she was still a child.
A fast rise before Eurovision
Her rise became much quicker in the 1990s. As a young teenager, she appeared on television talent shows, including RTBF’s Jeunes Solistes and the French programme Club Dorothée. Then came the real turning point. In 1997, she won RTBF’s Pour la Gloire in the junior category. Soon after that win, Belgian singer and songwriter Philippe Swan noticed her and helped shape her next step. He suggested the stage name Mélanie Cohl and wrote “Dis oui” for her. Therefore, her move from child talent to national name happened very fast, but it did not happen by accident. It came after years of preparation.
Eurovision 1998 and sudden fame
In 1998, Belgium chose Mélanie Cohl to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest in Birmingham. She sang “Dis oui” and finished sixth with 122 points. That result gave her a much bigger audience. More importantly, it made her a bestseller at home. The song “Dis oui” passed 30,000 Belgian sales in less than six weeks and earned a platinum disc.
First album, radio singles and Disney
After Birmingham, Mélanie Cohl moved quickly into mainstream pop. Her first album, Mes îles, came out in 1998 and reached number 15 on the Belgian French-language album chart. The record included follow-up singles such as “Je rêve de vous” and “Pardonnez-moi.” Later, she also released “Je saurai t’aimer,” a French cover of Jennifer Rush’s “The Power of Love.” In the same period, Disney chose her for an important soundtrack job. She sang “Qui je suis vraiment” for the French version of Mulan. As a result, her post-Eurovision career was not built on one hit alone. It also included album work, radio singles and a major film connection.
A move into musical theatre
Then, in the early 2000s, Mélanie Cohl opened a new chapter. In 2003, she joined the cast of the stage version of Les Demoiselles de Rochefort. She played Solange, one of the leading roles, opposite Frédérica Sorel. The production opened in Lille and later ran at the Palais des Congrès in Paris. Press coverage from the time highlighted the hard work of the two lead singers before the Paris opening. The musical also produced soundtrack releases, and “Chanson des jumelles” became one of the songs most closely linked with her theatre period.
The last public music years
Her final years in the public music world came soon after that. Mélanie took part in a National Lottery tour in Belgium in 2005. These were her last professional singing performances. In the same year, she stayed connected to television by serving on the expert jury for Eurokids, Belgium’s Junior Eurovision selection. She was also a jury member on Ils sont fous ces Wallons! In other words, she did not disappear overnight. Instead, she slowly stepped away from music and television work. By 2012, Belgian press reports described her as living a calm family life in Péruwelz, away from the entertainment spotlight.
Mélanie Cohl today
Today, Mélanie Cohl lives mostly outside the public eye. Her career was not very long, yet it covered several strong chapters: child performer, talent-show winner, Eurovision star, album singer, Disney voice and musical actress. So, even if she chose a quieter life later on, Mélanie Cohl still holds a clear place in Belgian pop and Eurovision memory.
