Biography

Märyon (real name Maryon Gargiulo) is a French singer. She is best known for representing Monaco at the Eurovision Song Contest 2004

Early Life and Musical Beginnings in France

Maryon Gargiulo was born in 1987 in La Seyne-sur-Mer, France. She showed her singing talent early in life. She first sang publicly at her niece’s wedding, surprising the guests. After that, she entered local singing contests. She won several regional prizes as a young performer. These early successes encouraged her to pursue music seriously. By her mid-teens, Maryon was ready for larger opportunities in music.

Eurovision 2004 – Monaco’s Return with “Notre Planète”

In late 2003, Monaco’s broadcaster Télé Monte Carlo (TMC) began searching for a Eurovision act. Female singers aged 16 to 35 from Monaco, Corsica, or southeastern France could apply by sending a cover song. Märyon, then 16, submitted her demo and impressed the selection panel. The broadcaster chose her out of over 500 candidates to represent Monaco in 2004. The choice of Maryon and her song “Notre Planète” was announced in February 2004, marking Monaco’s Eurovision comeback after 25 years away. Monaco had last participated in 1979, long before Maryon was born. There was great excitement and pressure on the young singer as she became Monaco’s first Eurovision entry in decades. In fact, Märyon was French-born, like many Eurovision acts from Monaco.

“Notre Planète” (“Our Planet”) is an upbeat dance-pop track with a meaningful message. The song was written by lyricist Patrick Sassier with music composed by Philippe Bosco. It is a plea to protect the Mediterranean Sea and the environment. This environmental theme made the song stand out at the contest. Monaco’s Prince Albert even congratulated Märyon publicly when she was selected for Eurovision.

Eurovision Performance in Istanbul

Märyon performed “Notre Planète” at the Eurovision semi-final in Istanbul on 12 May 2004. Monaco’s return did not go as hoped. “Notre Planète” finished 19th out of 22 entries in the semi-final, earning only 10 points. This result meant Märyon did not qualify for the grand final. Some observers noted that France did not broadcast the 2004 semi-final, so French viewers could not vote for Monaco that night. Despite the disappointment, performing on such a big stage at age 16 was a significant achievement for Märyon.

After Eurovision – Tours and Media Appearances

After Eurovision, Märyon continued performing on a smaller scale. She toured with a musical group called Jaya, singing live in various venues. In 2006, she tried to further her career through television. Märyon auditioned in the casting rounds of a French TV talent show. However, she did not advance far in that competition. This marked one of her last public appearances as a singer. “Notre Planète” remained her only official single release to date, and no full album followed. After that, Maryon did not embark on any major new music projects.

Later Life and Current Status

In the years after 2006, Maryon Gargiulo stepped back from the public eye. She has not released new music or made significant media appearances since then. Märyon has kept a low profile and gradually moved away from show business. She has not given any recent interviews, and little is known about her life outside music. As of today, she leads a private life away from the spotlight. She is married and has two daughters. Every now and then she performs.
