Biography
Dervish is a renowned Irish traditional music ensemble formed in 1989 in County Sligo, Ireland. The original lineup featured Liam Kelly (flute/whistle), Shane Mitchell (accordion), Brian McDonagh (mandola/mandolin), and Michael Holmes (bouzouki), who initially collaborated to record an album titled The Boys of Sligo. The addition of vocalist and bodhrán player Cathy Jordan in 1991, followed by fiddle player Tom Morrow in 1998, completed the group’s enduring lineup. ​
Dervish has earned international acclaim for their dynamic live performances. Their extensive discography includes both studio and live albums, with notable releases such as Harmony Hill (1993), Playing with Fire (1995), and The Great Irish Songbook (2019). The latter album features collaborations with artists like Steve Earle, Rhiannon Giddens, and Vince Gill, showcasing the band’s versatility and commitment to celebrating Irish musical heritage.
Throughout their career, Dervish has performed at major festivals worldwide, including Rock in Rio and Glastonbury, and has shared stages with artists such as James Brown, Neil Young, and Sting. In recognition of their contributions to Irish music, they received a lifetime achievement award from the BBC in 2019. ​
​In 2007, Dervish represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Helsinki, Finland. The band was internally selected by Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ, to be the country’s representative. Subsequently, a national final titled “Eurosong 2007” was organized to select the song they would perform. During this event, held on February 16, 2007, Dervish performed all four shortlisted songs, and the public selected “They Can’t Stop the Spring” as the winning entry. ​
At the Eurovision final on May 12, 2007, Dervish performed “They Can’t Stop the Spring,” but unfortunately finished in 24th place, receiving 5 points.Â
Beyond their musical endeavors, Dervish has served as cultural ambassadors for Ireland, accompanying the Irish President on state visits and participating in trade missions with the Prime Minister. Their impromptu session on the Great Wall of China during a visit to China exemplifies their dedication to sharing Irish culture globally. ​
