Biography

Black Lace is a British pop band. When they started in 1976 they toured throughout the country, and they released an EP. In 1979, they rose to fame when they represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Mary Ann”. The follow up single, however, was not a success. In 1980 they made a tour throughout Denmark as a supporting act for Suzy Quatro and they released a single with Tommy Seebach.
In 1981, several band members choose to go their own way. Alan Barton and Colin Gibb went on as a duo. For some time, they worked under the names of Lace and Busby, but in 1983 they released a single under their own name again. “Superman” became a hit. But their biggest success had yet to come… in 1984. The song “Agadoo” sold over one million copies worldwide and reached the #2 spot in the UK charts. They were able to release a first album in the same year. Also the follow up “Do the conga” was a hit. After this, it became harder for the duo to reach the top-40 of the UK charts. In 1987, Alan Barton left the band to sing with Smokie so the line up changed again. With several different line ups, Black Lace released a total of 15 albums. The band still excists. In 2019 Black Lace (Colin Gibb and Gordon King) became associated with UK dressage team “The Agadoo Girls”, consisting of 7 members with Gibb’s cousin, Debbie Cox, as team captain. They came top at their debut Team Quest competition at Richmond Equestrian Centre in June.
Former member Alan Barton died on 23 March 1995, at the age of 41, from injuries incurred when Smokie’s tour bus crashed during a hailstorm in Cologne, Germany.
