Biography
Anna Vissi, born on December 20, 1957, in Larnaca, Cyprus, is a Greek-Cypriot singer and songwriter renowned for her dynamic presence in the Greek music scene. From a young age, she exhibited a passion for music, beginning formal studies at the age of six at a local conservatory. Her early exposure to music set the foundation for a prolific career spanning over five decades.​
In 1973, Vissi moved to Athens to pursue her musical ambitions. She signed with Minos Records and collaborated with prominent Greek artists, including George Dalaras and Haris Alexiou. Her breakthrough came in 1977 when she won the Thessaloniki Song Festival with the song “As Kanoume Apopse Mian Arhi,” which also became the title of her debut album.​
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Vissi’s career flourished. She released several successful albums, such as “Kitrino Galazio” (1979), “I Epomeni Kinisi” (1985), and “Fotia” (1989). Her collaboration with composer Nikos Karvelas, whom she married in 1983 and later divorced in 1992, was particularly fruitful, yielding numerous hits and solidifying her status in the Greek music industry.​
Vissi represented Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980 with the song “Autostop” and Cyprus in 1982 with “Mono I Agapi,” achieving a fifth-place finish—the country’s best result at the time. She returned to Eurovision in 2006 for Greece with the song “Everything,” securing ninth place.
In 2000, she released the English-language album “Everything I Am,” aiming to reach an international audience. While the album had limited success abroad, it showcased her versatility as an artist. That same year, her double album “Kravgi” became a massive hit in Greece, achieving seven-times platinum status and becoming one of the best-selling Greek albums of all time.
Vissi continued to evolve artistically, exploring various musical styles and theatrical performances. She starred in rock operas like “Demones” and “Mala,” further demonstrating her range as a performer. In 2015, she released the album “Sinentefxi,” which received critical acclaim and commercial success.​
From 2015 onwards, Vissi held a successful residency at the Hotel Ermou club in Athens, captivating audiences with her live performances. She also embarked on numerous tours, both domestically and internationally, maintaining her relevance in the ever-changing music landscape.
In recent years, Vissi experienced a resurgence in popularity. Her 2013 song “Protimo” went viral on TikTok in 2023, leading to a re-release titled “Protimo ’24” in 2024. She also released new singles like “Lekes” and “Se Periptosi Pou,” both achieving platinum status. In 2024, she concluded her “Protimo… Anna Vissi” tour with a historic concert at the Kallimarmaro Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, attended by 66,000 fans
