Biography

The Latvian Vocal Group Cosmos was an a cappella band formed in Riga, Latvia, in 2002. The group had six singers: Jānis Šipkēvics and Andris Sējāns (countertenors), Juris Lisenko (tenor), Jānis Ozols (baritone), Jānis Strazdiņš (bass), and Reinis Sējāns (rhythm). They met while studying music and singing in the Riga Cathedral Choir School. Cosmos was special because they made music using only their voices, with no instruments.

In 2003, their first album, Cosmos, was a big success, winning the award for Best Pop Album in Latvia and reaching platinum status. They sang many styles, including pop, jazz, medieval, and even covers of famous songs like “Billie Jean” and “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” In 2004, they won the New Wave international competition for young singers, which made them famous in many countries.

Cosmos became well-known after representing Latvia at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest in Athens, Greece, with their song “I Hear Your Heart.” They finished 16th out of 24 with 30 points. They also performed with famous artists like Bobby McFerrin in 2005 at the Latvian National Opera and with Al Bano at the San Remo Festival in 2007.

The group released several albums, including Pa un par (2005), Turbulence (2008), and Pasaki man un tev (2009), a children’s album based on fairy tales. Their music was creative, using vocal sounds to mimic instruments, and their concerts were full of energy and fun.

Cosmos was active from 2002 to 2010, performing in countries like Russia, Germany, Canada, and the United States. They also taught workshops with famous a cappella groups like The Real Group and Take 6. After 2010, the members started new projects, like Jānis Šipkēvics and Reinis Sējāns forming the band Instrumenti.
