Formation and Song for Europe 1999
Times Three were a Maltese girl group that represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1999. The trio, lead singer Philippa Farrugia Randon, Diane Stafrace, and Francesca Tabone, formed specifically to compete in Malta’s Eurovision selection that year. Despite being newcomers, each member had an impressive background. For example, Francesca Tabone was the granddaughter of former Maltese President Censu Tabone. Diane Stafrace is the sister of singer Moira Stafrace (who co-wrote their contest song). Christopher Scicluna composed the music for their entry “Believe ’n Peace”, while Moira Stafrace wrote the lyrics. Notably, songwriters Chris and Moira were Eurovision veterans themselves, having represented Malta in 1994.
The group’s performance of “Believe ’n Peace” in the national Song for Europe contest captivated the judges and audience. Times Three triumphed at the Malta Song for Europe final on 20 February 1999, scoring 119 points to secure first place. The young performers, at the time just 19, 20 and 23 years old, were thrilled and surprised to win. They even described the win as a dream that had not yet “sunk in”, having only just emerged on the music scene.
Eurovision Song Contest 1999
After their national win, Times Three advanced to the Eurovision Song Contest 1999 held in Jerusalem. They took the stage in the grand final on 29 May 1999, performing 20th on the night. The musical style of “Believe ’n Peace” was reminiscent of Madonna’s contemporary “Ray of Light” sound, featuring an upbeat dance-pop vibe and a positive message of love and peace.
Malta had high hopes following a strong result in 1998, when Chiara (Chiara Siracusa) placed third for the country. Times Three’s appearance marked the next chapter. In the Eurovision final, Times Three delivered a spirited performance of “Believe ’n Peace” and earned a total of 32 points. By the end of the voting, Malta finished in 15th place out of 23 participating countries. This mid-table result meant that Times Three did not match Malta’s previous podium finish.
After Eurovision and Legacy
Times Three’s Eurovision experience turned out to be the peak of their short-lived collaboration. The group did not release any further songs or albums after “Believe ’n Peace”. Since the group existed solely for the Eurovision attempt, it effectively disbanded following the contest. In the years after 1999, each member moved on to her own path. Diane Stafrace transitioned to a successful career as an international fashion model and television presenter. Philippa Farrugia Randon and Francesca Tabone did not remain in show business and have kept their post-Eurovision lives largely private, focusing on personal and professional pursuits outside the limelight.
