About
Biography
Maja Blagdan (born May 16, 1968, in Split, Croatia) is a Croatian pop singer and one of the most recognizable voices in Croatian music history. Over nearly four decades, she built a career rooted in powerful vocals, heartfelt ballads, and a unique ability to connect with audiences across generations.
Early Life and First Steps in Music
Maja began making music at the age of 14. A few years later, she took a bigger step. She launched her music career as the lead vocalist of the rock band Stijene from 1986 to 1990. Those early years gave her a solid stage presence and a strong vocal foundation. After leaving Stijene, she moved toward a solo path. In 1992, Maja relocated from Split to Zagreb, where she began collaborating with prominent composer Zrinko Tutić after initially providing backing vocals on an album by Željko Bebek. That meeting changed everything. Tutić recognized her distinctive vocal talent, leading to their first joint work on the song “Santa Maria,” with which Maja won first prize from the expert jury at Zagrebfest that same year.
Solo Debut and Porin Recognition
Following her Zagrebfest success, Maja moved quickly into her solo career. She released her debut solo album, Vino i Gitare, in 1993 through Croatia Records. It earned her the Porin Award for Best New Artist. That award, the highest recognition in Croatian music, confirmed her as a major new talent. She then kept the momentum going. In the same year, she took part in Dora, the national final for Eurovision, for the first time. By 1994, she followed with her second album, Bijele Ruže, continuing her rise in the Croatian music scene. Her voice stood out for its warmth, range, and emotional depth, and Croatian audiences embraced her completely.
Eurovision and International Spotlight
In 1996, Maja stepped onto the biggest stage in European pop music. She represented Croatia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo with “Sveta ljubav” (Holy Love). Her song finished fourth with 98 points, marking Croatia’s best result in the contest at that time. Furthermore, she set a record for the highest note ever sung at Eurovision, a record she held until 2021, when Israeli representative Eden Alene surpassed it. The performance boosted her profile enormously. She released the studio album Sveta ljubav in 1996, which included her contest entry and brought her the Porin Award for Best Female Vocal Performance in 1997.
A Prolific Decade of Albums
Throughout the late 1990s and into the 2000s, Maja stayed busy in the studio and on Croatian stages. She released multiple studio albums, including Ljubavi Moja Jedina (1997), Ti (1999), Ljubavi, ljubavi (2001), and Sretna Žena (2008), which highlighted her consistent popularity in Croatian pop and romantic music. Also, she released several notable compilations. These include Moje Ime Je Ljubav (2003) and Zlatna Kolekcija (2007). Each release showed her ability to deliver melodic, vocal-driven material that connected deeply with fans. However, as the 2000s progressed, she gradually stepped back from the spotlight to focus on her personal life and spiritual journey.
Later Career and Spiritual Turn
Despite stepping away from mainstream music, Maja never stopped performing entirely. She briefly returned to television in 2010 through the HRT entertainment show Zvijezde pjevaju. Maja Blagdan also appeared in the musical Uskrsli at KazaliÅ¡te Komedija, a production about Holy Week, where she performed as Mary Magdalene. She has dedicated herself to spiritual music, performing with her band at religious seminars and spiritual renewal events. In 2020, she released the digital single “ÄŒekaÅ¡ Me,” showing she still had new music to share. Then, in 2023, she marked three decades of her work with the compilation Za nas – 30 godina, 40 hitova, a double album featuring 40 tracks. She made her most recent public appearance at the Porin awards ceremony in April 2023.Â
