Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Lynn Chircop was born in 1980 in Santa Venera, Malta. She showed a talent for music at a young age. At four years old, she entered a children’s song contest called Mini Kanta and won it a year later with the song “We Are The World”. She began studying classical piano in her childhood and later continued her music training in Leipzig, Germany. Lynn also explored other creative fields. She appeared as a model and acted in a Maltese television drama called Ipokriti. She even co-presented a youth TV show named Klabbzone. In her teens and early twenties, Lynn performed at local venues as a pianist and singer. She was the lead singer of a Maltese rock band known as Blend 7.
Eurovision 2003 and Musical Career
In 2003, Lynn achieved national fame by winning the Malta Song For Europe 2003 song selection contest. She performed the ballad “To Dream Again” and earned the right to represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest 2003 in Riga, Latvia. This was a major milestone in her music career. Lynn took the stage at the Eurovision final on 24 May 2003. She performed fifth on the night and finished 25th out of 26 countries.
Even before Eurovision, Lynn had showcased her songwriting talent. In late 2002, she performed her original composition “The Final Act” during a live concert series called Teatru Unplugged at Malta’s Manoel Theatre. Later, in 2010, she performed at London’s renowned Royal Albert Hall as part of a Beatles tribute concert.
Education and Transition to Law
While building her music career, Lynn also pursued her education. Her main academic focus became law. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Law and European Studies from the University of Malta. She then went on to advanced studies and earned her Doctor of Laws degree. In addition, Lynn earned two Master’s degrees – one in Human Rights Law and another in Diplomatic Studies. .
Legal Career and Human Rights Work
Lynn Chircop began her legal career in 2005 as a lawyer in Malta’s public service. In government, she served in roles such as project manager for the Education Ministry, senior legal officer at the Lands Authority, and head of the legal unit at the Social Care Standards Authority. Her legal expertise is broad. She specialized in family law, property law, and international law, with a focus on child protection cases like child abduction.
With a passion for social justice, Lynn became active in human rights causes. She conducted research on children’s rights and defended the rights of vulnerable people through her legal work. She also founded an initiative called One Voice Malta to help integrate migrants into the community. In this role, she advised that learning the Maltese language is a key step for newcomers to feel included. Lynn often speaks out on social issues, from domestic violence to equality, using her platform as a lawyer and former artist to raise public awareness.
Public Service and Recent Achievements
In recent years, Lynn Chircop has taken on more public roles. She eventually became a senior manager in Malta’s Human Rights Directorate, where she contributes to national policy development. In 2021, she decided to enter politics. She joined the Labour Party and ran as a candidate in Malta’s 2022 general election. This step gave her another way to use her voice in national affairs.
International organizations have recognized her expertise as well. In late 2024, she became a member of the Council of Europe’s Group of Experts on Action Against Human Trafficking (GRETA). As part of this European expert group, she helps monitor and advise countries on how to combat human trafficking and protect victims. Lynn remains a frequent guest on Maltese TV and radio, discussing human rights topics such as gender-based violence and child protection.
