Biography

Early Life and Education

Alexandra Căpitănescu was born 31 July 2003 in Galați, Romania. She was equally drawn to science and went on to study physics at university in Bucharest, initially aspiring to become a medical physicist. However, her musical talent and desire to perform soon took center stage. At just 15 years old, Alexandra made her first television appearance on Românii au talent (Romania’s Got Talent) in 2019. Her soulful rendition of a Janis Joplin song impressed the judges and hinted at the star potential she would later fulfill. This early success encouraged her to continue balancing her academic pursuits with her love of music.

Breakthrough on The Voice (2023)

In 2023, Căpitănescu’s big break came on Vocea României (The Voice of Romania). At the blind auditions she wowed all four coaches with her powerful vocals, prompting each of them to turn their chair for her. Alexandra chose rock singer Tudor Chirilă as her coach and consistently delivered show-stopping performances under his mentorship. In the semi-finals, she gave a dramatic live rendition of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” that brought the house down and earned rave reviews from the coaches. Her extraordinary focus on stage and dynamic presence led coach Tudor to praise her “absolutely extraordinary” concentration, while pop star Smiley called her “a born artist”. Alexandra ultimately won The Voice of Romania in December 2023, impressing the jury with her vocal control and emotional intensity. This victory catapulted the 20-year-old singer into the national spotlight and marked the beginning of her professional music career.

Debut Releases and Musical Style

Following her Voice triumph, Alexandra Căpitănescu wasted no time launching her recording career. She signed with Universal Music Romania and released her debut single “Nu pot” in late 2023. In April 2024, she introduced her first extended play, entitled Căpitanu’, which featured five tracks and showcased her range as a songwriter. Over the next two years, she put out a string of singles that cemented her presence in the Romanian music scene. Songs like “A ta” (2024) and “Arde” (2025) highlighted her powerful pop-rock sound, while an energetic collaboration with producer Majii on “Tare” showed her versatility. Alexandra also explored different moods in her music, from the sultry “Dilaila” to the ballad “Stea căzătoare”. She even released a festive holiday single, “De sărbători,” in late 2025. Critics have noted that her artistic style brims with intense emotion and energy, qualities that have helped define her distinct musical identity.

Live Performances and Stage Presence

Beyond the recording studio, Căpitănescu has earned acclaim for her live performances. After her Voice win, she embarked on concert tours across Romania, bringing her music directly to fans in numerous cities. Audiences and critics praise her commanding stage presence and ability to convey powerful emotions in every performance. Each live show is charged with the raw passion that has become her trademark. Notably, Alexandra’s duet of “Shallow” with coach Tudor Chirilă in The Voice final and her theatrical interpretation of The Phantom of the Opera showcased her flair for dramatic, high-impact performances. She has proven equally comfortable in intimate venues and on grand stages, always engaging the crowd with her strong voice and confident charisma. By continuing to perform live while pursuing her studies, Alexandra demonstrated a remarkable work ethic and a commitment to honing her craft.

Eurovision 2026 Journey

In early 2026, Alexandra Căpitănescu set her sights on the Eurovision Song Contest. Romania had been absent from Eurovision for two years, so the national selection Selecția Națională 2026 was highly anticipated. Alexandra entered the competition with a bold, dark pop-rock track titled “Choke Me.” On 4 March 2026 she won the Selecția Națională final, securing her place as Romania’s Eurovision representative. A professional jury decided the outcome, and “Choke Me” earned an almost perfect score: five out of seven jurors awarded it the maximum 12 points, for a total of 82 points. Alexandra has described “Choke Me” as “a cry of despair” that is also a call for self-love and liberation from the limits imposed by one’s own anxieties. She is set to fly the Romanian flag at Eurovision 2026 in Vienna, appearing in the second semi-final on 14 May 2026.
